Demos are Swanson Park, Bellevue this weekend - Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3pm.

Being the location is one of THOR's mountain bike trails, the demos will be primarily for mountain/trail bikes.

Century/Meteor Ride - August 13 & 14
meteor-showerSouthwest Iowa Nature Trails, Inc. (SWINT) is sponsoring a century ride on August 13 & 14, 2011. This is our 10th annual century ride, and it has grown in popularity each year. This ride will be a Weekend Mile Century that starts in Council Bluffs at the trailhead near Lewis Central School.
The highlight of the trip is the evening viewing of the Perseid Meteor Shower. Every August, the Earth ploughs through a swarm of dusty particles shed by passing comet Swift-Tuttle. As the particles, each no bigger than a grain of sand, hit the atmosphere at 135,000mph they burn up, producing trails of light that shoot across the sky.
The ride will go through Mineola, Silver City, Malvern, Strahan, Imogene, Shenandoah, and finish at Sportsman’s Park in Shenandoah 44 miles from the Council Bluffs trailhead. Camp at Sportsman’s & enjoy free access to the swimming pool & showers. Meal and entertainment will be at the Wabash Winery. The return trip on Sunday will finish the Weekend Ride.
If you would prefer the comfort of a bed, there are 4 hotel/motels in Shenandoah.
The pool in Shenandoah is a great place to stop for a “cool dip”. Pack your swimsuit and towel on your bike and enjoy a free swim. Pool pass is in your ride packet.

The purpose of this ride is to have fun, enjoy the natural beauty of the trail, and explore our small southwest Iowa towns. This is not a race! Have a leisurely ride. Stop along the way for a drink, lunch, snack, or a swim. The farmers market is open in Silver City with crafts, baked goods, and fresh produce. Mechanical and SAG support will be available along the trail.

Bike to Work Week

This morning Council Bluffs Mayor Hanafan and Omaha Mayor Suttle proclaimed Bike to Work Week May 17-21. The Mayors arrived at the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge riding a MAT bus. Their bikes were on the rack on the bus.

While both cities have been celebrating Bike to Work Week for about 5 years, this was the first time the two Mayors held a joint rally. New commuter maps were available. Blue Line Coffee supplied coffee and muffins before the ride. On the approach to the bridge the proclamation was read and the Mayors lead bike rides to their prospective offices.

There were 22 riders that headed over the Bob Bridge onto the streets of Council Bluffs. There was a short reception at Bayliss Park at the completion of the ride. In this photo, Zach receives the proclamation from Mayor Hanafan.

Full Moon Ride

Eight riders headed out for the April Full Moon Ride. Tom, Randy, and Blaine started out from the shop a little early (Tom felt he might be riding slowly these days). Zach and Night Trail brought up the rear (soon passing us).

The original plan was for a pavement ride. But with 20-40 mph winds, we headed up the Wabash Trace. Other than the wind, it was a beautiful evening for a bike ride.

Great turn-out for the ride last night - over a dozen. Too bad a couple guys had to head back, work calling. Weather was awesome for riding in the woods in November!

We headed out from the shop riding the paved trail to Lake Manawa. Regrouped in the parking lot at Manawa, took photos, then rode a lap. Casualties - one flat, one endo, caught lots of burrs, some muddy tires - a fun ride.

Full Moon Ride

November Full Moon Ride - This Friday. We are meeting at the shop and riding to Lake Manawa. Then a lap or two on the singletrack. Tom rode there the other day - trails are in good shape except for one tree to watch for and a muddy/wet spot. After the ride we will head someplace to eat.

Manawa Trails Day

Manawa work days are as follows....

Sept. 20, Sunday, 5 until dark, trim weeds back, cut any branches and remove them.
Sept. 21, Monday, 5 until dark, trim weeds back, cut any branches and remove them, start on any low/muddy areas.
Sept. 22, Tuesday, 6 until dark, finish any work.

Sept. 24, Thursday, 6 until dark, work on any areas that need it, and ride the course.

Please plan on attending at least one day!
Large areas will already be cut before the 20th by the mower to cut down on the work loads.

Drinks will be provided all days, met at the red truck in parking lot, bring your tools that your need for the days you plan on coming, don't have tools we have you covered just show up with the heart to work! Many riders in the past have brought their bikes to ride back to the sections that need to be worked and have saved time.

If you ride these trails...get out there and help mantain!!

September Full Moon Ride

About a dozen riders headed out from the shop for the September Full Moon Ride. It was a beautiful evening for a bike ride.

From the shop we rode over to the Wabash Trace and up to Margaritaville. It was obvious that others had decided to ride there, too! Was a good party up there.

A fast ride down the hill, loading on the bikes, and a couple of us ended up at Village Inn for food.

The Xtreme Century is on Sunday.

The Xtreme Century is our annual 100 - mile ride around the roads of Southwest Iowa. The cost is $30.00 per rider, and here's what you get:
(1) Pre-ride breakfast provided at Xtreme Wheels
(2) Ride support for the entire 100 miles, including several food and drink stops along the way
(3) Vehicle support, if needed
(4) An exclusive Xtreme Century t-shirt
(5) Lunch (and dessert) are provided at the end of the ride

You will ride at your own pace. This is not a race, unless you want it to be. As always, the route is a combination of flat and hilly terrain. It IS Southwest Iowa...

The total number of riders will be limited, so please call Xtreme Wheels or stop in at the shop to reserve your spot (388-0800). Do it because you can!

Lewis & Clark Multi-Use Trail (Iowa DOT)

The Lewis and Clark Multi-Use Trail is one of the five statewide significant bicycle trails identified by the Iowa DOT that could be completed in the next 20 years. This trail will extend from the South Dakota border at Sioux City to the Missouri border for a distance of approximately 150 miles.

The purpose of this plan is to study route alternatives and recommend a specific route for official designation as Iowa’s Lewis and Clark Multi-Use Trail. A steering committee will be established jointly by the Iowa DOT and the consultant. This committee will provide overall guidance and direction for the study.

The Lewis and Clark bicentennial celebrations demonstrated the magic that this great exploration continues to hold for Americans of all ages. The Iowa DOT and its partners envision a network that knits together roads, trails, waterways, parks, and greenways to create contemporary experiences for modern-day explorers and, in the process, helps people discover the towns, businesses, museums, open spaces, and assets of western Iowa and surrounding regions. The prospect of this multi-use trail and the benefit it can bring to the region is exciting.

Its Full Moon Ride again. Weather and trail conditions permitting, we are planning an off-road ride to Lake Manawa and do a lap or more on the dirt trails. Meets at the shop and head out at 7pm.

Late update: With the heavy rains this morning, the trails at Lake Manawa will be too wet. We will do a pavement ride. Destination TBA (depending where the group wants to ride to).

Riders started from the bike shop, over to Lake Manawa, up Indian Creek Trail, then along the East side of Lake Manawa, before riding on back to the bike shop.

Gruber Assist electric bike

The pedal is just the tip of the iceberg — the motor and electronics are hidden inside the seat tube with the battery tucked away in a saddlebag, and it's controlled with a handlebar-mounted switch. Gruber Assist's 200-watt motor will deliver 100 watts of power to the rear wheels, and runs for between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours on a charge, depending on how much you pedal.

Local Radio Talk Show Host Offers to Give Bicyclists a Voice

Requests Help from Cycling Community

KFAB radio talk show host Tom Becka has offered the Omaha area bicycle community an opportunity to appear on a full hour segment of his daily 4:00-7:00 show. Becka asks that for the air time, the bicycle community assist him in his drive to gather used or new winter coats in good condition. The spring Winter Coat Drive will provide needed clothing for Native Americans at South Dakota reservations, some of the most impoverished people in America. Coats will also be donated locally to the Open Door Mission.

Becka’s challenge—the cycling community must gather and deliver 100 used winter coats to him by next Friday, May 15.

Members of the cycling community will be able to express their thoughts on issues relevant to their concerns: commuting and the need for dedicated bike lanes on streets, trail expansion and related property acquisition and other cycling issues including safety and advocacy.

Becka, a long-time critic of some bicyclists practices, promises to be even-handed and give us a fair hearing.

The Omaha Pedalers Bicycle Club is leading the effort with assistance from Activate Omaha and area bicycle shops. To donate coats, drop them off at an area bicycle shop and the Omaha Pedalers will deliver them to KFAB studios before Becka’s show next Friday.

May Full Moon Ride

Charge up those lights - its Full Moon Ride time.

This month's ride is scheduled for Friday night. Assemble 8pm at the ride. The May ride is planned as a off-road ride (weather and trail conditions permitting). We will ride over to Lake Manawa MTB trails, ride there, and finally back to the shop. Open-ended ride end time.

BTW, this Friday, the ride will be on the actual full moon. So, get out and ride!

April Full Moon Ride

Last Friday about 20 riders headed out from the shop for the April Full Moon Ride. We rode to Lake Manawa, re-assembling at the river parking lot.

From there, the fat tires headed into the woods for a dirt ride. Skinny tires rode around the lake. Everyone eventually ended at the Spillway for eats and/or libations.

I know the economy is bad and you might have found a "jewel" in the rough but for crying out loud - do some research.

The following is a guide for those of you who are absolutely clueless about your garage sale or thrift store finds.

1) Just because your bike was made in Europe doesn't mean you've got a winner. They made alot of junk, too.
2) A low end bike that was $97.00 in 1976 is not magically worth $400.00 now.
3) Adult bikes don't have goosenecks.
4) If we can see that the chain is rusty in the picture, automatically grade the bike as crappy.
5) If you get asked how many speeds it has and don't know, immediately pull your ad.
6) Telling us that you found it in a barn is not a rationale for you overpricing it.
7) Take the $10 price tag from when it didn't sell at the garage sale off the seat before you take your CL pic and ask $250 for it.
8) "Light and FAST!" . . . o.k., if you say so.
9) Not everything with those cooky, curvy handlebars is a race bike.
10) Don't be offended if someone offers you an insulting amount less than you want for your bike - they're just smarter than you.
11) Tires are tires and wheels are wheels. These terms are not interchangable.
12) Breaks should be referred to as "brakes", petles or petals as "pedals".
13) The bike was not made by Shimano. I know you saw that name somehwere on it but trust me on this one.

I hope this has cleared up some things for you.

Lance Armstrong and Bontrager today released more details regarding Armstrong’s recent collarbone surgery. While it was previously reported that Armstrong’s right clavicle was screwed and plated back together after his March 23rd crash at the Castilla y Leon stage race in Spain, Armstrong and equipment sponsor Bontrager, jointly announced that he was the world’s first recipient of an inForm® CarbonClavicle™ Upgrade.

Originally slated to be released at the AAOS (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeon) Convention May 18-24th in Las Vegas, Bontrager moved up the launch date of the inForm CarbonClavicle to aid the return of Armstrong to the peloton.

“The original intent of the Bontrager inForm line was to use medical research to aid us in creating better cycling contact points, such as saddles, shoes, and grips. But when we did the research into the most common cycling-related injuries, the broken collarbone proved to be an area where we could actually help cyclists get back on the road sooner,” relates John Balmer, head of Bontrager Development.

The CarbonClavicle, available for both left and right shoulders in four male sizes and four WSD (Women’s Specific Design) sizes, is an actual carbon fiber replacement of the clavicle. Developed with the aid of Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Mark Timmerman, a Bontrager consultant, the inForm CarbonClavicle has greater shock absorption, greater impact strength, and a greater tensile strength—all while being grams lighter than the OEM bone.

“The installation on Armstrong was completely coincidental. But I must admit, the Bontrager marketing team was doing high-fives when we heard about Lance’s crash. It really was a marketing god-send. I mean, could there have been a better way to launch the new Bontrager medical Upgrade line?” explains Chris Clinton, Bontrager Marketing Manager.

The installation procedure is substantially quicker than the conventional collarbone repair procedures of stabilizing, drilling and pinning, as this is a full replacement. Essentially, the broken bone is completely removed and the CarbonClavicle is anchored in place. Armstrong’s procedure took approximately 30 minutes and will reduce his recovery time from 3 weeks, to 5-7 days for the sutures to fully heal.

The delay in releasing details was due to an extended approval process with the UCI, which has now ruled that since this piece is structural yet provides only minor aerodynamic advantage over the traditional ‘bump’ of a healed broken clavicle, it falls with the current parameters of the UCI rules.

Future sponsorship plans include full support and pre-emptive upgrades for the full Trek-Livestrong U23 team. “These guys are early in their careers, and if averages apply to the team, we think we can prevent about ten or more future breaks across the 12 members of the team,” adds Clinton.

But with the rain coming, Chris, Dave, Marc, Paul, and myself decided to spend our beautiful past Saturday working on the trail to address several erosion issues. About 20 hrs from the five of us. Some of the guys have been putting in other hours on other days tweaking things here and there.

Economic Recovery Bill

Bicycle and Pedestrian Projects in the Economic Recovery Bill???

The House and the Senate have each passed their own version of the Economic Recovery Bill, aimed at creating jobs and stimulating the economy. Both bills include billions for transportation infrastructure, but only the House bill includes funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects in the Transportation Enhancements program. The House bill includes approximately $1.35 billion for Transportation Enhancements of which 50-60% is traditionally spent on bicycle and pedestrian projects. The Senate bill does not explicitly include Transportation Enhancements, so it’s unclear whether this funding will be in the final bill.

We need to make sure Transportation Enhancement funding is in the final bill.

This week there will be a conference committee where several members of the House and several members of the Senate will work together to reconcile the two bills. Conferees need to hear that Transportation Enhancements are important to stimulating the economy, creating green jobs, and moving us towards a sustainable future.

Please call your senators and representative and ask them to tell the Conferees to support Transportation Enhancements in the Economic Recovery bill. Tell them:

· Bicycle and pedestrian projects create jobs at the same or better rate than highway projects.
· These smaller projects can move quickly to hire local businesses and help local economies.
· Providing safe and convenient bicycle and pedestrian access gives families healthier and cheaper transportation freedom and choice.
· Improving sidewalks and bike lanes can make a downtown a destination further helping the local economy.
· Better biking and walking options also help ensure greater energy independence, less pollution, and a healthier United States!

Full Moon Ride

Tonight was the February Full Moon Ride. What a beautiful evening for a bike ride! When we headed out from the shop, the sun was setting, winds were nearly calm, and temperature was about 55.

There were 12 of us riding the bike trail over to Lake Manawa, up Indian Creek trail to Jonesy's. After our fill of Mexican food, we pedaled back to the shop. The wind was starting to pick up - just what we needed, riding into the wind on full stomachs.

Snowy Ride

Andrew, Blaine, and Tom braved the elements to do the first Full Moon Ride of 2009.

By the time we headed out from the bike shop, the snow was falling heavily. There was a strong wind from the North.

We stopped at Valley View Park. By the time we stopped to take a couple of photos, our tire tracks were nearly obliterated as we recrossed the bridge over Mosquito Creek.

Xtreme Winterfest Bike Ride

Today was the 7th Annual Xtreme Winterfest Bike Ride sponsored Xtreme Wheels Bike & Sport and the Council Bluffs Parks & Recreation Dept. It was the first ride in the bicycling calendar.

The ride started from the Western Historic Trail Center and ended up at the Riverside Grill. The weather was "damp" - constant mist with temperature of 36 deg. Not the best conditions - but could have been worse.

Some folks rode from Omaha and around CB, stopped at the Riverside Grill, before heading home. Several rode on up to the Bob Kerrey Bridge. Others just rode up to the restaurant and back to the trail center.

Bill estimated some 70-75 riders participated. Pretty good attendance with the nasty weather!

Shimano Recalling Dura Ace Wheels

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BRAIN)—The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Shimano American Corp., have voluntary recalled about 275 Dura Ace Carbon Clincher wheels. The manufacturer is Shimano Components SDN of Johor, Malaysia.

The rim surface and spoke hole plugs on the wheel can cause a puncture to the inner tube, resulting in a flat tire. This can cause the rider to lose control and fall.

No injuries have been reported.

This recall involves Shimano Dura Ace Carbon Clincher wheelsets with model number WH-7850 C24CL sold for road racing bicycles. The rim has labels that read "Shimano WH-7850," "Dura Ace," and "Carbon 1380." These wheels are intended for use with high-end adult road racing bicycles.

These wheelsets were sold at bicycle specialty stores and dealers nationwide from April 2008 through August 2008 for about $1,300.

Consumers should stop using the bicycles with the recalled wheels, remove the wheels, and return them to their local bike dealer or retailer for a free inspection and repair.

Yakima Law Suit

Yakima Sues Four Rack Companies

BEAVERTON, OR (BRAIN)—Yakima filed lawsuits against four of its competitors last week, alleging infringement of six of Yakima’s rear hitch, trunk and roof rack patents.

Yakima Products, Inc. is suing Saris Cycling Group, Hollywood Engineering, Inc., owner of Hollywood Racks, and Car Mate USA, owner of Inno Racks, for allegedly violating four patents that cover Yakima’s trunk hitch and rear mount rack systems.

Another suit alleges Rocky Mounts violated Yakima’s patent for its roof mount rack system and for the clamping mechanism on the roof bike tray.

Neil Nusbaum, owner of Hollywood Engineering, Inc. was surprised to hear of the lawsuit on Thursday morning, having not yet been served with civil papers.

“The only thing I’d say is if in fact I am served, it’s unfortunate that things can’t be settled out of court—in conversations out of court,” Nusbaum said.

Bobby Noyes, owner of Rocky Mounts, declined to comment on the litigation, and representatives from the other two defendants did not return phone calls on Thursday.

According to documents filed in Oregon District Court, Yakima alleges all four companies are “making, using, offering for sale and selling, inducing others to make, use, offer for sale and sell, bicycle carriers and assemblies” that infringe patents, including the T-Rax and Guardian 2 and 3, without authorization from Yakima.

The violations have caused damages exceeding $75,000 per case, according to court documents.

Yakima is asking the judge for a decree that the defendants have infringed Yakima’s patents; a permanent injunction barring further use of the patents; and compensation and royalties for the losses in profit due to the unauthorized use of Yakima’s inventions.

None of the defendants have been involved in patent disputes with Yakima in the past—at least none that made it to the court system—however, Thule sued Yakima twice in the late 1990s for patent infringement. Yakima sued Thule in 2000 for the same reason, but dismissed the lawsuit two months after it was filed.

Neither Yakima nor its attorney responded to requests for further comment on the suit.

Starting Monday, Sept. 29, the general public will be able to begin using the new bike racks mounted on Metro Area Transit (MAT) buses.

Local bike enthusiasts can practice using the new bus bike racks in a learning session set for Monday, Sept. 15. The event - sponsored by Activate Omaha in conjunction with MAT, the City of Omaha and Omaha by Design - will begin at 5 p.m. in the front parking lot of MAT headquarters, 2222 Cuming St. All those interested are invited to participate.
